Against All Odds

Secret Strength of Women Who Succeeded Against All Odds (Part One)

“Against All Odds” is a documentary series about what it actually takes to succeed when the odds are stacked against you, told by women who did it, in an industry that did not expect their success. This documentary series is dedicated to capturing, reflecting, and advocating for women’s voices in the engineering and geoscience sectors.

Part One of this documentary featured ten senior women leaders across Western Canada’s most influential engineering and geoscience organizations. Each one tells the story of how they built a career, an identity, and influence in a profession that wasn’t designed with them in mind.

This documentary series talks about workplace climate, burnout, mentorship, leadership, and the quieter question of what it means to come home and manage your caregiving responsibilities.

The main concept of the film is a dandelion growing through concrete. It’s a symbol of resilience, perseverance, and hope; the secret strength that these successful women have shared to build their successful careers.

Director's Take

“I started this project to answer one very important question: what does it actually take to succeed when the odds are stacked against you?

What I found and captured were powerful insights from successful women, sharing what they wish they had learned sooner.

I have a brother and a sister in engineering. I grew up seeing both sides of this story. And I think, as an organizational psychologist with a brother and sister in engineering, I feel it is my responsibility to do something. And this documentary series is my attempt at that.

When it comes to making a prediction about the future, I am an optimist. I believe the workplaces we build next will be more human than the ones we inherited. The progress is happening, although slower than many of us would like, but it is happening because of people who have spent careers pushing for it. And this documentary series is my small contribution.”
